New book on Penrith

A new book on the history of Penrith in the thirteenth century has been published by CWAAS. The Kings of Scots, The Liberty of Penrith, and the making of Britain (1237 - 1296) by Keith J Stringer examines the relationship between the Liberty and the English and Scottish crowns.

10 June Image Gallery added

Date the event has passed:

An Image Gallery has now been added to the website.  The first  images include a selection of extracts of early maps showing parts of Cumbria.

Also included are scans of several engravings from Thomas Pennant's 1801 Tour of Alston Moor. 

Collection of research papers acquired by History Department

The Department of History has recently been given the research papers of the late Gordon Elliott of Hull, who pioneered the study of field systems in Cumberland.
