Exploring the Listed Buildings of Barrow-in-Furness

Early in 2023 Cumbria County History Trust worked with Historic England on a volunteer project to survey and research important and historic buildings in Barrow-in-Furness.

A group of volunteers worked as part of a team to check the accuracy of information held on the National Heritage List for England and to undertake contextual research into those buildings. This work involved drawing on rich local archival resources, including the recently digitised Sankey Photography Archive.

This research will be used by Historic England to assess the quality of information on the National Heritage List for England (https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/), as well as being used as part of their 'Missing Pieces' project by adding extra contextual information: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/missing-pieces/

This work will also feed into the ongoing work of the Victoria County History of Cumbria project in rewriting the history of the town.

There are many listed buildings in Barrow, though a priority was those which lay within four historic wards of the town: Central Ward, Salthouse Ward, Ramsden Ward (which cover an area between Salthouse Road, Duke Street and Abbey Road), and Barrow Island.
